Learn about portable watercolour painting over three days, while enjoying Suffolk countryside, architecture and our many pink pubs

Spend three days painting Suffolk pink – we’ll find plenty to paint in this landscape sketching course!  We explore the countryside to seek how to bring a sense of place and emotion into our sketches.   We might include dramatic pink skies.  There’s sure to be typical Suffolk cottages.

This course is also about discovery and collecting a range of images – your sketches will contain glimpses of buildings, studies of hedgerows, views of fields and East coast rivers.  It’s a beautiful part of the world and we want to share it with you!

In a journey of style, we will take the simplest of materials out on short sketching walks, stopping now and then to sketch at stunning painting locations. You can decide sit in one place or go for a longer walk (we’ll give route options).

Pink is typical of many houses here in Suffolk.  The shade of Suffolk pink varies in hue – so it’s a great colour to experiment with and learn about watercolour.  Often found on older buildings, Suffolk pink seems to have been first mixed in the 14th century, when pink was mixed by adding natural substances to traditional limewash and then painted over the plasterwork of our wooden framed houses. Elderberries release a beautiful carmine red, pig/ox blood mixed with buttermilk make a more iron-hinted pink, blackthorn or sloe juice made a redder pink.

We have several pubs in mind for our lunches and starting points, including The Fox at Newbourne and the Sorrel Horse at Shottisham, both within striking distance of the Art Safari Studio in Woodbridge.  Both have excellent reputations for their hospitality and great food.

More information on what materials to bring with you will be sent to you on booking.
